How to Prepare for Your Private Pilot Checkride
The private pilot checkride is your first major milestone as a pilot. The practical test consists of two parts: an oral examination and a flight test. Both are evaluated against the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS).
Oral Examination Preparation
The oral portion typically lasts 1-2 hours and covers your knowledge of regulations, weather, aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and flight planning. DPEs want to see that you understand why things work, not just that you've memorized facts.
Key areas to focus on include:
- Airworthiness requirements – Know ARROW documents and required inspections
- Weather minimums – VFR weather requirements for different airspace classes
- Emergency procedures – Be able to explain your aircraft's emergency checklists
- Cross-country planning – Demonstrate your flight planning process
What to Expect on Test Day
Arrive well-rested and organized. Bring all required documents, your flight plan, and weather briefing. The examiner will start with the oral portion, and if you pass, you'll proceed to the flight test where you'll demonstrate the maneuvers to ACS standards.
