1. Get Your Pilot’s License: The first step to becoming a certified flight instructor is to obtain your pilot’s license. You will need a minimum of a private pilot’s license to become a CFI. 2. Get a Medical Certification: To be eligible for the CFI certification, you will need to pass a medical exam with an aviation medical examiner. This exam will assess your physical and mental ability to be a safe pilot.
3. Complete Your Flight Training: You will need to complete a set amount of flight hours to become a CFI. The minimum flight hours you need to have depends on the type of training you are receiving. If you are receiving training from an FAA–approved school, you will need to complete at least 250 hours of flight training.
- Have logged at least 250 hours (or 190 hours Part 141) total time
- Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate or ATP (ASEL or AMEL) with Instrument Rating
- Hold a valid FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate (or higher)
4. Take the Knowledge Test: You will need to take and pass the FAA knowledge test to become a certified flight instructor. This test covers topics such as aeronautical knowledge, airmanship, risk management, and teaching principles.
5. Pass the Practical Test: The final step to becoming a CFI is to pass the practical test. This test will assess your knowledge and skills as a flight instructor. During the test, you will be evaluated on your ability to teach and instruct students, manage risks, and fly safely. How many endorsements are required for the CFI Checkride?
Five endorsements are essential for one to appear for CFI checkride:
- Flight practical and instructor ground test
- Fundamentals of basic instruction knowledge test
- Endorsement for practical tests
- Spin & Stall training
- Certification from the flight instructor stating that she/he is qualified to guide and teach first time certified flight instructor applicants
